STRIVING TO WORK TOGETHER FOR POSITIVE WELL-BEING. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We believe that our name and identity will provide a firm foundation on which we can build an exciting new future for our organisation and yours.
Why Together? --------------------- We believe being "in this together", that whether you are people who make use of our services, or people affected by our services, like carers, families, friends, staff or working partners, we are striving together to tackle the challenges ahead. And, of course, it also reflects the fact that we always try as a service-provider not to do things to people or for them, but to work together with them. Together is a word that people use to talk about their feelings in a positive way: "Your experience of our organisation we believe will also be positive".
What's all this about well-being? ---------------------------------------------- The World Health Organisation (WHO) like our organisation believes in "a state of well-being in which individuals ( or organisations ) realise their own abilities, can cope with the environment around them, can work productively, effectively and fruitfully and is/are able to make a positive contribution to their community." Firstly, the concept of well-being covers a whole range of issues from potentially severe conditions to more widely experienced problems such as work place stress and day-to-day ailments. We remain totally committed to people ( and/or organisations ) dealing positively with daily experience of life, but are keen to expand the types of support we offer by reaching out to new groups of people and organisations. The idea of well-being also brings with it a notion of wider issues that contribute to contentment in life - from the work we do, to the friends we have, our financial situation, to our physical health. This reflects our "Whole-person", holistic way of working, which always looks at all aspects of the lives of the people ( and organisations ) we are working with, rather than focusing narrowly on their "health needs". We want to move beyond current ways of thinking and working, because, while they continue to have value, we think they are too limiting.
New ways of looking at support. ---------------------------------------------- Our identity is not just a cosmetic exercise, it reflects real changes in the emphasis of our work. We have had a holistic approach since the start - long before the term was fashionable. When we started out - we knew that practical support is just as vital as medical treatment. To coincide with our identity, we are adopting a new perspective to help us describe how we approach our work. This draws on the best of current thinking; formalises our whole-person approach; and describes it in a language appropriate to the 21st century. It involves looking at things from four points of view: 1. the individual's or organisation's view of what they want 2. a more objective view of how others see the individual's or organisation's needs 3. the perspective of people or 'other' organisations affected by our work 4. the wider perspective of our community and society as a whole.
All four perspectives need to be considered if we are to offer people ( and organisations ) the best possible support on their journey of life, work and leisure, with family, friends and associates.
Same high standards. ------------------------------- You will be pleased to hear though that some things about our organisation have not changed. As we have our 15 years and over, of experience and innovation behind us to draw on, and other traditions to maintain too, we will stay true to the spirit of the aims of our organisation and help it thrive over the coming years. For example, the basic idea behind some of our most recent work such as our services, planning and support structures, reflect our original aims to help people ( and organisations ) to enjoy "life's ordinary associations and values". Although there have been great improvements in treating health issues, improving well-being and creating positive life experiences, we all know that we also need to look beyond traditional approaches if we are to move forward. And the challenges of tackling stigma, discrimination (in its widest form), feelings and experiences remains. So we need to broaden our thinking beyond individual health issues to help wider communities understand their well-being needs. And we must stay up with - and ahead of - current thinking.
Tell us what you think. --------------------------------- Our identity and working draws on the latest thinking in the field of health and well-being. But if you have any comments on any aspect of our identity please email: comments@lucamtrade.com.
